It has formerly been assigned to the family [Dasypogonaceae](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dasypogonaceae), [Xanthorrhoeaceae](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xanthorrhoeaceae) or [Liliaceae](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liliaceae).

They are generally tufted [deciduous](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deciduous) perennials with long narrow blade-like leaves that arise from a central stemless base and have thick woody [rhizomes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhizomes) and fibrous roots.
