# Stenocarpus

_**Stenocarpus**_ is a [genus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genus) of about 25 species of woody trees or shrubs, constituting part of the plant family [Proteaceae](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proteaceae).

In Australia, 10 species are known growing naturally in [rainforests](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainforest) of eastern [New South Wales](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_South_Wales) and [Queensland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queensland) and in the northern monsoonal forests of Queensland, [Northern Territory](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Territory), and [Western Australia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Australia). Two of these eastern Australia species also grow naturally in [New Guinea](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Guinea) and one in the [Aru Islands](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aru_Islands), [Moluccas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moluccas).

The greatest species diversity occurs in [New Caledonia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Caledonia), where 12 endemic species are known.

By far the most well known in Australia is _Stenocarpus sinuatus_, the Queensland firewheel tree, which is commonly used as a street or garden tree on the east coast.
