# Xanthostemon

_**Xanthostemon**_ is a [genus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genus) of trees and shrubs, constituting part of the myrtle plant family [Myrtaceae](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myrtaceae). This genus was first described in 1857 by German–Australian botanist [Ferdinand von Mueller](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferdinand_von_Mueller). According to different official sources, between 46 and 51 species are known to science. They grow naturally in [New Caledonia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Caledonia), [Australia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia), the [Solomon Islands](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_Islands), and [Malesia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malesia), including the [Philippines](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippines), [New Guinea](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Guinea), and [Indonesia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesia).
